Adelaide Odyssey Festival 2012

July 2012

In 2012 Adelaide's Hellenic Cultural Festival ODYSSEY enters its 7th year as the Greek Orthodox Community of SA inc. (GOCSA) once again presents a series of exciting arts and cultural events from 22 September - 13 October, 2012.

With this year's theme being a celebration of Hellenism, in 2012 ODYSSEY will celebrate all things that make us 'Greek', as we look into the window of our culture.

Throughout the duration of the festival, this year's hub, Olympic Hall will play host to exhibitions, lectures, documentaries, musical and theatrical events, school holiday workshops, a cafeteria & taverna and the inaugural ODYSSEY IN THE CITY event which will see activities spill into Franklin street for a two day street festival on the October Long weekend, featuring food, entertainment, wine and dance.

Based on the theme of celebrating Hellenism, last year's winner of the Odyssey Art Prize, Helena Carapetis is currently working on the artwork for this year's 2012 Odyssey Festival brochure.

A recent graduate of UniSA's Bachelor of Design (visual communication), Helena won last year’s Art prize of $2000 with a trio of illustrations based on the theme 'Reconnecting with your roots'.

"As a third generation Greek Australian, last year's theme provided me with a fantastic opportunity to explore and reflect upon my Greek heritage and the amazing journey of my Pappou Andrew as he travelled from Ikaria to Adelaide in 1938. The time spent with my Pappou and the strong influence that he had on my life was the inspiration for my artwork. It was such a surprise and a great honour to win the prize last year and now an added bonus has been the opportunity to work on the illustration and graphic design for this year's festival! I certainly encourage everyone to enter, as it is a great experience and opportunity for artists with a love of Hellenic culture and you never know where it may lead you", Helen Carapetis said.

GOCSA encourage everyone to be part of this journey into our world of Hellenism at the 7th annual Adelaide's Hellenic Cultural Festival Odyssey 22 September - 13 October, 2012.
