CYPRUS
Positive developments
July 2015
President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades assured that through sincerity and determination the prospects for an effective dialogue in the ongoing Cyprus talks are created.
Speaking at the rural town of Kalopana-giotis, president Anastasiades said he hoped that in the near future he will be in a position to announce to the people of Cyprus "that we have reached a solution that will become acceptable by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots".
President Nicos Anastasiades said on that he was looking forward to working with "my friend Mustafa Akinci (the T/Cypriot leader) to finally reunite our homeland, free from foreign troops, and for Greek and Turkish Cypriots to peacefully live and co-exist together once again, as they had done so for centuries."
The president said one could not disregard the concerns of the Turkish Cypriots.
"It was everyone’s mistakes that led to the division and unfortunately, the motherlands played the worst role".
While the convergence between the former president Demetris Christofias and then T/C leader Mehmet Ali Talat were the real catalyst in today's developments, it is believed a solution of the 50 year long problem could now be very close.
