Australian Cypriots remember 1974 coup and invasion

The Justice for Cyprus Coordinating Committee SA (SEKA), in association with the Cyprus Community of SA Inc, once again have organised a series of events on Sunday 16 July and Wednesday 19 July 2017, to mark the 43rd anniversary of the fascist coup and the Turkish Invasion of Cyprus.

On Sunday 16 July, a wreath laying ceremony was held at the Memorial situated at the premises of the Cyprus Community at Welland, attended by representatives of the South Australian Government and Opposition and local community leaders.

Official guests, amongst others, were Minister for Police Peter Malinauskas MLC representing Premier Jay Weatherill, David Pisoni on behalf of the Leader of the Opposition Stephen Marshall, Angela Evans Mayor of Charles Sturt Council, President of the Greek Orthodox Community of SA Bill Gonis, Con Dalas President of the Intercommunal council of the Archdiocese and Greek Consul General Andreas Gouras.

On Wednesday 19 July, as part of the commemorative events, the Cypriot Community of SA welcomed the Director of the Office of President, Michael Sofokleous who visited Australia on behalf of the Anastasiades Government and the Republic of Cyprus. He spoke at the Cypriot Community Club, on current political developments in Cyprus. The Cypriot official guest was accompanied by the High Commissioner of the Republic of Cyprus in Canberra, Martha Mavrommatis and Deputy Head of Mission/Consul General of the Republic of Cyprus in Canberra Vakis Zisimos.

The event was very well attended by members of the Community and guests including the Speaker of the House Michael Atkinson, David Pisoni MP, Greek Consul General Andreas Gouras, ALP candidates for Adelaide Jo Chapley, Colton Angela Vaughan and Irene Pnevmatikos. Refreshments and a light supper were offered to the public by the Cyprus Community.
