Talks on Turkish Cypriots adopting Euro held in Nicosia
The adoption of the Euro currency across the island has been discussed at the on-going UN sponsored Cyprus talks.
Representatives of the European Commission and the European Central Bank and the two negotiating teams, under respective heads Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami discussed the issue yesterday.
As it stands, the Republic of Cyprus uses the Euro, whilst the Turkish break-away areas use the Turkish Lira.
The meeting was held in the framework of the bi-communal ad hoc committee for the preparation of the future Turkish Cypriot constituent state for the implementation of the EU acquis communautaire.
This is the first discussion that is taking place concerning the adoption of the Euro right after a settlement, aiming to avoid a possible gap.
A well informed source has told the semi-state Cyprus News Agency that it is certain that more similar meetings with the European institutions will follow suite, discussing more specialized aspects of the matter.
