A Cyprus deal could be reached by January
Washington deems that a solution for divided Cyprus could be reached before Barack Obama steps down as US president in January 2017.
Greek officials are aware of Washington’s view, which echoes comments made by US Secretary of State John Kerry, who, during his visit to Athens in December, said that the Mediterranean island’s reunification was finally "within reach."
Sources in Athens said that the US is keen to see a peace deal on Cyprus as it would mark a positive development in a region exposed to volatility from different directions.
Optimism over Cyprus is also based on the fact that the problem has been on the same "within-reach" list as the normalization of US-Cuba ties, which have seen remarkable progress in recent months.
In contrast, the same sources said, Greece’s name dispute with the neighboring Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) appears to have been put on the back burner, also because of the ongoing refugee crisis.
