Take part in a week-long celebration for Bonegillla
Migrant Reception and Training Centre as it celebrates
its 70th anniversary from November 13 to 19!
With the program of events now released, this huge event
will kick off at Bonegilla Migrant Experience with tours
and exhibitions, followed by the official anniversary
celebration to be held on Saturday, November 18.
Throughout the week, there'll also be live music and
theatre performances, an author talk, a Sunday Roast
lunch, market stalls and more.
Start your visit by seeing the site with a guided tour,
discovering Block 19 Bonegilla, the last remaining block
of more than 24 blocks that made up the Bonegillla
Migrant Reception and Training Centre, which received
and trained migrants to Australia following World War
II.
You can also browse the Recreation Hut exhibition, which
features an insight into recreational activities at
Block 19 and shares the life stories of two former
residents, Wanda Skowronska and Giovanni Sgro.
Across the border in Albury, you can also view a
collection of objects owned by former residents of
Bonegillla Migrant Reception and Training Centre,
including items people brought from their homeland to
give them comfort, including photographs, domestic
appliances, children’s toys, books, clothing and more.
The main event on Saturday, November 18 from 11am to 4pm
is an opportunity to immerse yourself in the sights,
sounds, flavours and surrounds of the Bonegilla Migrant
Reception and Training Centre - 70 years on.
Albury LibraryMuseum staff, who are custodians of the
Bonegilla Collection, will also be attending the event
on Saturday to provide advice on how to care for your
family objects and pictures.
Featuring live music from The Habibis, Gypsy Suitcase,
Bohemian Nights, Diddly Eyes and Vardos, mini-museum
exhibitions, author talk, Me and Bonegilla performances,
European style food at the pop-up cafe, and beverages
provided by King Valley Brewery, this is an event not to
be missed!
On the Sunday, you are invited to find your place on a
communal dining table, just like the former residents
did, and enjoy a traditional Aussie Sunday Roast for
lunch, accompanied by authentic European entertainment.
