ON ANZAC WEEKEND Author of “Diggers and Greeks” to visit Renmark
April 2011
An Australian Military Historian, Dr Maria Hill will be visiting Renmark during the coming ANZAC weekend and will be in town from Friday 22 until Monday 25 April.
This year marks the 70th anniversary since the Nazi invasion in Greece and the Battle of Crete and Dr Maria Hill, herself of Greek origin, was invited by the Renmark Sub-branch of the RSL to speak briefly on the topic at the ANZAC Day Commemoration Ceremony, to take place at 10.40am on Monday April 25 at the Cross of Sacrifice, Ral Ral Avenue, Renmark.
During her visit, Dr Hill will take the opportunity to present her recently published book “Diggers and Greeks”. The presentation will be held at the RSL clubrooms, Tolarno Street, Renmark on Saturday April 23 at 12.00 noon. Whilst in the Riverland, Dr Hill is keen to speak with members of the local Greek community who may have lived in Greece during the period of the Nazi invasion of Greece in World War II and afterwards.
Dr Hill is also interested in talking with surviving members of the Australian Armed Forces in North Africa during World War II. She is researching a new book on the topic. Anyone wishing to contribute to her research, whether it be by photographs, artefacts or a personal interview, may contact the Secretary of Renmark RSL, Mr Tony Guster on 0447 781820 to arrange it.
Renmark RSL and Dr Hill extend a special invitation to local people of Greek background to attend both, the ANZAC ceremony and the presentation of the book in the RSL club rooms.
