Australia’s population passes 27 million

November 2024 The Australian Bureau of Statistics has released new figures revealing that Australia’s population has surged past 27 million people. The latest population figures mark a significant growth spurt, which has largely been driven by post- pandemic overseas migration. Specifically, in the 12 months to March 2024, the population grew by 2.3 per cent, with migration accounting for 83 per cent of this increase. Net migration added 509,800 people, with students comprising a significant portion of the population increase. Natural population increase contributed 105,500 people, while the national fertility rate remains low at 1.6 births per woman. Western Australia recorded the highest population growth at 3.1 per cent, while Tasmania saw the smallest at just 0.4 per cent. Australia’s next population milestone of 28 million has been projected for 2027.
