Sharp increase in fuel prices across Australia
October 2026
Oil prices began the week with a significant increase as ongoing hostilities in the Middle East intensified
concerns about global energy supplies.
Brent crude rose by 2.80 per cent to US$107.54 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude gained
2.29 per cent to US$102.34 a barrel.
Markets remain on edge following attacks on oil facilities and commercial shipping in the region. A tanker
carrying approximately two million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil was struck by a drone in Iraqi territorial waters,
while attacks on other vessels in the Persian Gulf were also reported.
Analysts warn that the crisis could restrict oil supplies for an extended period, keeping international energy
prices and fuel costs elevated.
The impact is already being felt in Australia. In Adelaide yesterday, the price of regular unleaded petrol
reached $2.30 per litre, premium unleaded was selling for $2.50 per litre, and diesel climbed to $2.90 per litre,
placing additional pressure on household budgets and transport costs.
